What is Salkehatchie?
Salkehatchie Summer Service is a servant ministry throughout counties in South Carolina where youth and adults from different walks of life volunteer to come together to serve the community by repairing homes for those who cannot afford to or are not physically able to do it themselves. Our goal is to make these homes warm, dry, safe, and more comfortable for the families living there while doing so with a Christian attitude and sharing the love and caring of Jesus with these families and their neighbors, many of whom may never have been exposed to His example.
Camp participants are provided opportunities for personal growth and service, as well as spiritual enrichment through evening programs held at the camp. These young people, ages 14 and up, live together for one full week. Supervised by adults, they eat, sleep, work, sweat, worship, play and pray together. Most of them go back home realizing that they have received much more than they have given and many have made life-changing decisions in regard to their faith, family relations, or career goals.

Salkehatchie Summer Service is a Limited Liability Company under the program of the South Carolina Conference Board of Global Ministries and is overseen by a Board of Managers.

in Newberry, SC
Traditionally, the Newberry camp runs from Saturday to Saturday beginning on the Saturday before the third Monday in July of each year. In 2023, as we restarted camp after COVID, we changed to a Sunday to Friday schedule beginning on the Sunday before the third Monday in July. For the foreseeable future, we will remain on a Sunday to Friday schedule.

We are housed at Central United Methodist Church in beautiful downtown Newberry. We have impacted much of Newberry County - having worked on homes in Newberry, Whitmire, Pomaria, Silverstreet, Prosperity, and Little Mountain.
